Languages facilitate communication. Communication is fundamental for relationships at the individual, community, corporate and state levels. The better Canadians are able to communicate with Asia, the stronger our relations will be.
We need a plan to help all Canadians learn languages.
For kids this plan must be FUN.
For teenagers this plan must be COOL.
For college students this plan must be PRACTICAL.
For adults this plan must be SIMPLE.

Hey guys!
Thanks so much for voting and for all the great comments. I just stumbled on some interesting statistics I thought you might be interested in. It seems that world-wide, Canada has the 4th highest incidence of both Mandarin (preceded by China, Taiwan, USA) and Japanese (Japan, USA, Brazil) speakers. The 2006 numbers for Mandarin were just under 850,000 - which means learning languages is not only critical for foreign relations, but so important for building local communities too!
If you have some time over the holidays, why not brush up on some fun and practical vocab? Via www.letshelpyou.org, we can definitely introduce you to a supportive learning community and maybe even a language partner. Or, if you prefer to learn alone, email me at michael.alexis@hotmail.com - and I'll help introduce you to some great resources.
Best wishes for the happiest of holidays,
Michael

Hi Michael, I'm Liz from Suzhou, China. I love languages, because it is a bridge of communication that leads you to the world, it helps you get to know people from different countries and make friends with them, so I think learning language is very interesting and important!
I really like your idea, I'm glad to see that you are working on building relationship between Canada and Asia, and promoting our cultures and languages in Canada, I do appreciate it! I think it's time for us to do something that makes Asian people know Canada more and more!
Great work!

This is a wonderful video. My 5 year old son really enjoyed it, as he's very interested in the sounds of other languages at this stage of his life. My 3 year old daughter thinks Ming is beautiful. Great work!

Hello this is Mei,
I was born in mainland China, studied in Canada and now working in Hong Kong S.A.R.
Fortunately, I never had too much difficulty living in any of these places because I realized the importance of language when I was a teen and started learning English and Cantonese right away. Being multilingual gives us great advantages such as getting better chances at job or school interviews, and being able to make friends from all over the world. Language is the essential tool what connects humans as a whole. Not knowing how to use this tool would be like having eyes but cannot see, and having voices but cannot be heard. So it's really great that Mike and Ming decided to make this wonderful video that reminds us what a significant role language plays in our lives. It's also very thoughtful of them to suggest different learning plans for different age groups. I hope they could continue making more of these videos and provide us with more cool tips on language-learning strategies.
PS: Mike, didn't know your mandarin is so awesomely fluently now~ keep up the good work!

Hello. I am from Cyprus and having the opportunity to study abroad in Swiss and UK, I couldn't agree less with Michael and Ming about the importance in learning languages. The methods they created for kids, teenagers, college students and adults are well thought. I hope that more people will get this opportunity and learn foreign languages and understand the importance (somehow people believe that they will never use any other language besides English). My mother language is Greek and when I hear a foreigner trying to speak my language I appreciate it more. Well done guys!!!

I agree...looking at the growth of Asia...it makes me think how we need to catch up.

What a great plan. That is exactly what is needed for these age groups. Kids have such short attention spans that if its not fun they wont do it. Teens need to think what they are learning is cool, college students only take classes they have to and that are going to be a practical benefit and adults lives are so complicated and they are so set in their ways that it needs t be simple to be effective and available.
Good work!
